Why EAGALA?

EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) is a model of equine-assisted psychotherapy and personal development. It can be good for mental health because it uses horses in a therapeutic setting in ways that are different from traditional talk therapy. Some of the main reasons include:

    •    Nonverbal connection: Horses respond to body language, emotions, and energy rather than words. This helps people become more aware of their feelings and behaviors, even when they have trouble putting them into words.

    •    Safe reflection: Working with horses allows individuals to project their experiences, emotions, or challenges onto the horse in a safe and nonjudgmental way. This can make it easier to process difficult emotions.

    •    Immediate feedback: Horses naturally mirror human emotions and behaviors. If someone is anxious, withdrawn, or assertive, the horse often reacts in real time, offering direct feedback that can lead to insights.

    •    Experiential learning: Instead of talking about issues in the abstract, participants do activities with horses. This hands-on experience often helps new perspectives and coping skills stick more deeply.

    •    Building trust and confidence: Forming a relationship with a horse can improve confidence, communication skills, and a sense of trust—important foundations for healing.

    •    Regulation and mindfulness: Horses live in the moment and model calm awareness. Being around them often helps people slow down, regulate stress, and feel grounded.

    •    Accessibility: For people who struggle with traditional therapy—such as children, trauma survivors, or those resistant to talking—equine-assisted therapy provides another pathway for growth and healing.
